8th Edition of Mostra Benjamin de Oliveira showcases performances in Ouro Preto and Nova Lima
The 8th edition of the Benjamin de Oliveira Showcase, a celebration of Afro-Brazilian culture and the valorisation of black bodies on stage, is taking place in the metropolitan region of Ouro Preto and Nova Lima, Belo Horizonte. This year's edition marks the first time the showcase is being held outside Belo Horizonte.
The showcase is part of the Ouro Preto Winter Festival program and will run from July 17 to July 27. The program opens with the piece "Chico Rei: Galanga do Congo", a joint creation of the Rabisco Brincante and Assunto Suspenso companies, on Friday, July 17, at 8 PM.
On July 23, at 8 PM, the audience will be treated to a performance of "Aláfia: The Creation of Humanity", presented by the Ajayó Teatro em Pé company. This production tells the story of the world from the Yoruba perspective, mixing Afro-Brazilian knowledge and the everyday poetry of the streets. The show is directed by Dhu Rocha, with dramaturgy by Gio de Oliveira and acting by Dani dos Anjos, Dhu Rocha, Gio de Oliveira, and Josi Oliveira.
In "Aláfia: The Creation of Humanity", Olorum's son Oxalá is entrusted with creating the Earth, but Odudua takes the lead in the creation of all things, leaving Oxalá with the creation of humanity.
The performance "Árvore do Pai Boi" will be presented by the Bando company on July 27, at 6 PM. This piece is contemplated in the Novas Dramaturgias edict of the Belo Horizonte City Hall.
The performances at the showcase are free and will take place at Casa da Ópera de Vila Rica/Theater Municipal of Ouro Preto. The showcase honours Benjamin de Oliveira, the first black jester in Brazil.
