Flair Airlines Expands to Mexico City with Affordable, Year-Round Flights

In an exciting development for budget air travel, Flair Airlines has announced plans to launch non-stop flights to Mexico City from both Vancouver and Toronto, starting October 27, 2025. These new routes will operate three times per week, making Flair the first low-cost airline to offer direct flights between Canada and Mexico City, competing with Aeroméxico and Air Canada but at lower prices.

The announcement comes as part of Flair's broader expansion strategy, which involves fleet growth and deliberate route development to increase connectivity between Canada and Mexico with affordable options. Flair's CEO, Maciej Wilk, expressed optimism about filling these routes based on the airline's strong performance on existing Mexican routes such as Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, and Cancun. Wilk emphasized that visa requirements have not hindered demand and that Flair is confident in the success of these new Mexico City flights.

Flair aims to grow its fleet from the current 20 Boeing 737-800 aircraft to at least 30 planes by 2027, with potential room for as many as 30 to 40 aircraft longer term. All planes are the same model, allowing flexible assignment across routes. Wilk highlights the airline’s high operational reliability, citing a 99.4% completion rate and a 73% on-time performance in recent months, exceeding that of larger carriers.

As Flair prepares for its expansion, the team at Flair is growing and more functions are being brought into Vancouver. The airline has already expanded its office space in downtown Vancouver in June to accommodate its growing team of approximately 50 staff.

However, Flair's recent past has not been without challenges. In March 2023, Lessor Airborne Capital Ltd. confiscated four of Flair's planes due to lease payment issues, causing flight cancellations and customer complaints. But Flair has since resolved its differences with Revenue Canada and has an established payment plan, ensuring that the issue will not affect the new Mexico City flights.

There has also been a decline in travel by Mexicans to Canada following the Canadian government's requirement for most Mexican visitors to have visas. Despite this, Flair remains optimistic about the success of its new routes.

Round trips are expected to start at $261, making affordable travel to Mexico City a reality for many Canadians. Flights from Vancouver depart on Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays at 5:10 p.m., and return flights depart on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Saturdays at 12:45 a.m.

In a positive turn of events, Flair is no longer at risk of planes being confiscated because lease payments are being made. The federal government had obtained a court order to seize and sell Flair's property due to unpaid taxes related to import duties on its planes, but this issue has been resolved.

Flair's executive team includes four members based in downtown Vancouver. The airline's success in the Mexican market and its ambitious expansion plans suggest that it is well-positioned to offer affordable, year-round flights to Mexico City and beyond.

The expansion of Flair Airlines to Mexico City, with affordable flights starting October 27, 2025, will impact both the finance (prices) and lifestyle (travel opportunities) sectors for many Canadians. Despite the visa requirements and past challenges, the airline's strong performance on existing Mexican routes and high-reliability fleets indicate confidence in the success of these new routes, offering budget-friendly travel options to Mexico City.
