Agreement for Enhancing the Lake Constance Bicycle Path Quality

The Lake Constance Cycling Route, a flagship of European cycling tourism, is set to undergo significant improvements with the signing of a new quality pact. This long-distance cycling route, which connects Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, has been a popular choice for cyclists since its establishment in 1983 by the International Lake Constance Conference (ILCC).

The quality pact, initiated by the Lake Constance Cycling Route office and supported by the Nahverkehrsgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg, aims to make the route more attractive and safe. The close cooperation of municipalities and international cooperation is crucial for its successful implementation.

The Lake Constance Cycling Route offers a unique blend of safety, a nature experience, and a climate-friendly alternative to motor vehicle traffic. It contributes significantly to regional added value and is one of the most popular long-distance cycling routes in the region. Mayor Robert Scherer of the city of Meersburg, a consistent advocate for the maintenance and development of the route, has stated that it is one of the most important tourist and cultural axes in their region.

The New Quality Agreement involves authorities and organisations from multiple states and districts around Lake Constance, including regional governments, transport and tourism agencies, and local municipalities in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The business office of the Lake Constance Cycling Route will coordinate this quality management, located at the International Lake Constance Tourism GmbH.

Government Councillor Dominik Diezi from the canton of Thurgau and Transport Minister Winfried Hermann have both emphasised the need for demand-oriented improvements to maintain and further strengthen the route's appeal. The ADFC has recognised the Lake Constance Cycling Route as a quality cycle route, and continuous improvements are necessary for it to maintain high standards.

The close coordination across administrative boundaries is a prerequisite for the successful implementation of the quality pact. To implement improvements, a resolution passed in June 2025, has committed the countries and cantons around Lake Constance to a coordinated further development of the cycling route.

For further information, the Ministry of Transport can be contacted via their Press Office or Citizen Representative. Nina Hanstein, Managing Director of International Lake Constance Tourism GmbH, has also emphasised the international tourist significance of the cycling route. The close cooperation of municipalities and international cooperation aims to make the cycling route more attractive and safe, marking an important step for the further growth of the region.
