Anticipated congestion on roads during the extended Whitsun holiday weekend, as per the ADAC's caution. - Anticipated Traffic Congestion Over Holiday Weekend as Peraded by ADAC
During the upcoming Ascension Day weekend, motorists in several countries, particularly Germany and France, can expect challenging traffic conditions due to a surge in holiday travel and ongoing roadworks.
According to the ADAC, a German automobile club, significant disruptions on highways are predicted to begin as early as Wednesday afternoon, reaching a peak between 3 PM and 7 PM. Congestion is anticipated to be most prominent on major routes leading out of urban areas and toward popular destinations.
The ADAC also warns of heavy traffic on Thursday, the holiday itself. In addition, around 1200 roadworks on German highways will further complicate travel during this period.
In France, roads across the country are expected to be busy and congested throughout the weekend, with delays especially likely during specific times of the day.
Ascension Day weekend also sees an increase in North Sea region and northern European traffic, as many travel for leisure purposes. Particularly along coastal routes and islands, heavy traffic has already been reported leading up to the holiday.
Travelers are encouraged to plan ahead, consider alternate routes, and brace for substantial delays, especially during the afternoon and early evening of Ascension Day. In Austria and Switzerland, delays are also expected due to the holiday and favorable weather conditions, with likelihood of congestion on the West, Tauern, Brenner motorways, and the Gotthard route.
By planning ahead and adopting flexible travel arrangements, motorists can ensure a smoother journey and avoid becoming stranded in traffic jams during the Ascension Day weekend.
The Commission, considering the predicted traffic disruptions and roadworks during the Ascension Day weekend, especially in Germany and France, might decide to initiate the procedure provided for in Article 93 (2) of the Treaty regarding the coordination of traffic management and infrastructure during peak travel times. While facing congested roads and heavy traffic, travelers might alter their leisure lifestyle by adjusting their travel plans, opting for off-peak hours or alternate routes, thus reducing the impact of the weather and ensuring a smoother journey.
