Berlin Hosts Techno Party for All Ages - Even the Tiniest Raver

In the heart of Berlin, a unique movement is taking shape, blending the city's iconic techno culture with a family-friendly spirit. Known as Kinder Rave, this concept is part of the broader Kinder der Nacht (Children of the Night) events, bringing a daytime, techno experience to younger audiences in a safe and inclusive environment.

The story of Kinder Rave began in 2022, when Matt Buccelli, a marketing specialist from the US, sought a more family-friendly environment to share his love for electronic music. Inspired by the nostalgic and unifying ethos of Kinder der Nacht, he started Kinder Rave in Berlin's Treptower Park.

However, a minor hiccup occurred at the first anniversary party when Buccelli and another father, Diego Ain, were busted by the police for throwing illegal raves due to a lack of a permit to blast big speakers in the park. After this incident, Buccelli and Ain, who is a Brazilian-born electronic musician with a unique approach to sound, began collaborating with official venues known for electronic music, such as RSO, for daytime events.

Ain, who also goes by Ain The Machine, collaborates with brands like BMW and creates tracks using only the sounds of his body, voice, and objects. Together, Buccelli and Ain are focusing on empowerment and growth, not just through music, but also through a newsletter addressing issues faced by creatives who have become parents.

As Kinder Rave continues to evolve, the founders have plans to take it to the next level, with a focus on their third annual Halloween party on October 27, 14:00-18:00. The events are popular and have grown into a community with almost 2,000 members on their Telegram channel.

The Kinder Rave events are designed with families in mind, offering a safe, daytime setting where parents and children can engage with electronic music together. This approach aligns with movements such as Kinder Musik, which promotes a kinder, more community-focused scene. These initiatives emphasize solidarity, respect, and care within nightlife and music events, an evolution that supports the social sustainability of Berlin’s rave culture.

The events feature toys, craft corners, glitter, face paint, and a dance floor for children, while parents can dance and enjoy electronic music. Pivi Weiss, a face painter, has been joining Kinder Rave events since the first event in 2022, and Valentin Muthers (Valentino 45), also known as YBMF DJ, is a regular attendee and DJ at these events.

Kinder Rave contributes to the preservation and continuation of Berlin's rave ethos by passing the culture down to children while adapting it to family contexts. This helps in maintaining electronic music’s relevance across generations and ensures a nurturing environment that balances rave aesthetics with family needs. The movement forms part of a wider resurgence and reinterpretation of rave culture in Berlin, intertwined with efforts to maintain its original spirit of unity, freedom, and inclusivity, but evolving towards a kinder, more accessible future.
