Tourism Revenue in Hesse Surges Above Pre-Pandemic Levels

In a significant turnaround for the Hesse tourism industry, the region's gross revenue from tourism reached 14.56 billion euros in 2022, marking a 1.6% increase compared to the pre-COVID year of 2019 [1]. This recovery was first reported in 2022, and since then, guest and overnight numbers in Hesse have been steadily increasing [2].

Economics Minister Kaweh Mansoori (SPD) stated that the tourism industry has stabilized after challenging years, with the industry's recovery being attributed to a strong recovery in overnight stays and tourism spending [3]. The hospitality industry generated 7.08 billion euros in 2022, while the retail sector contributed 4.28 billion euros [4].

Although day tourism declined significantly (-19.6%), the overall impact of more overnight tourists and higher spending helped boost revenues above pre-pandemic figures [1]. Other key factors contributing to the rebound include ongoing government subsidies and economic stabilization efforts in Germany, which supported consumer confidence and spending power [3].

The resilient demand for tourism-related services in Hesse directly benefited the hospitality industry, retail, and service sectors [1]. Despite inflation and travel cost changes in 2022/2023 affecting tourism expenses, the revenue growth observed in 2022 and extending into 2024 was not prevented [5].

As of the current information, figures for 2023 are not yet available. However, the recovery of the tourism industry in Hesse from the COVID-19 crisis is a promising sign for the region's economic growth.
