In the port city of Vladivostok, along the Amur Bay, resides Galina Ivanovna Kuchinskaya, a lifelong listener and admirer of the radio waves. Raised amidst sunrises and sunsets, her connection with the sea and its symphony of sounds was fostered from an early age. The radio was introduced to her town, Second River, in 1949 - a late arrival yet one that brought the world to her ears.
The early radio broadcasts were musical, introducing Galina to the works of classical composers from around the globe. She fondly recalls countless hours spent listening to operas and operettas, absorbing the stories of Tchaikovsky, Glinka, Rachmaninoff, Strauss, Liszt, Shostakovich, and more. Inspired by her passion for music, Galina joined the ballet circle at the Pioneers' House, slipping into the rhythm of life at sea.
Remembering the "Quiet Ocean" broadcast, a voice that echoed across all the oceans, Galina recalls her connection to her homeland. At the age of 20, she embarked on a new journey, serving as a medic on the "Soviet Union" ship. It was there that she was entrusted with reading an article on the radio for passengers, a task she found daunting but ultimately embraced.
Her career took a curious turn when she moved to the research vessel "Vityaz." Together with the radioman, Kuchinskaya began recording radio broadcasts, gathering the world's most intriguing tales from library books, like the Guinness Book of Records. The dining room and mess hall echoed with shared stories, scientific discoveries, and accounts of the friendly crew's deep-sea expeditions. It was a testament to the spirit of camaraderie aboard the vessel.
As the decades passed, "Vityaz" sailed the oceans, crossed the equator, and ventured beyond the 40th parallel. In her 65,000-mile-long journey, Galina and her team made 27 scientific discoveries, including the first sighting of the silver sailfish. The radio, for Galina, became a living encyclopedia, filling her life with priceless knowledge.
On the 90th anniversary of Primorye Radio, Galina expresses her heartfelt congratulations and wishes for a long and prosperous future. As a constant listener, she looks forward to more fascinating broadcasts that will continue to enrich her life and connect her to her beloved homeland.
