'Awaited Development': Delaware residents may commence purchasing recreational marijuana from August 1 onwards.

Delaware residents legally authorize purchasing recreational marijuana as of August 1.

After a two-year wait, **Delaware's recreational marijuana sales are set to commence on August 1, 2025**, with 13 existing medical marijuana dispensaries set to kickstart the regulated commercial market. This follows the legalization of marijuana and the creation of the market in Delaware back in the spring of 2023.

The Office of the Marijuana Commissioner (OMC) has granted so-called conversion licenses to these dispensaries, allowing them to sell recreational products. However, the state has authorized 30 recreational licenses for retail sales overall, but these shops are still in the process of approval and will not open on Aug. 1.

The 13 medical dispensaries that will start recreational sales on Aug. 1 have obtained retail licenses at a cost of $100,000 each. Jen Stark, who runs The Farm with dispensaries in Felton and New Castle, is delighted to start recreational sales at her dispensaries on Aug. 1.

The delay in the start of retail sales has been a source of frustration for cannabis advocates, but the start of recreational sales is seen as a long-overdue move, as many customers have been shopping in neighboring states. Gov. Matt Meyer supports the start of marijuana sales, stating it will create opportunities for entrepreneurs.

The illicit market for marijuana in Delaware is considered out of control, and the start of regulated sales is much needed. The start of recreational sales on Aug. 1 signifies a significant step in attracting customers who have been buying cannabis products in neighboring states, as well as generating critical revenue for schools, infrastructure, and public health systems.
