But when I decided to venture beyond my preconceived notions, I discovered a treasure trove of hidden gems that, to be honest, this island has in abundance.
Must-Visit Destinations
Port de Sóller
My absolute favorite find during my trip to Mallorca is Port de Sóller. Getting there involves a picturesque ride on the El Tren de Sóller, an old wooden train that takes you through the Sierra de Alfàbia mountain range, with its mix of tunnels, bridges, and stunning views.
Upon arrival, you'll feel like you've stepped into a completely different island. The mountains tower around the small town while the lapping waves gently bump boats together in the port. If you're looking for a romantic retreat or a peaceful escape from the crowds, Port de Sóller is perfect. Although it can get busy during summer months, plenty of visitors head over on day trips.
Within Port de Sóller, be sure not to miss the Església de Sant Bartomeu, a beautifully decorated church, or the fantastic views from the lighthouse. For hikers, Sóller also serves as a great starting point to explore the surrounding mountains.
Hiking Barranc de Biniaraix
Mallorca boasts numerous breathtaking hiking trails, and the Barranc de Biniaraix is one I highly recommend. The ancient gorge, not far from Sóller, offers an incredible change of scenery – from olive and lemon terraces lining the valley to rugged ravines.
Hiking through the Batllaroig and Cala Gallina waterfalls, you'll discover hidden lakes and enjoy insanely beautiful vistas looking out across the mountains and ocean. Stunning Beaches
Mallorca's waters and beaches are the fantastic shade of light blue usually associated with tropical islands, not European beach destinations. If lounging on a beach or engaging in water sports is your thing, Mallorca has you covered.
Playa de Palma, near the airport, offers a long stretch of sand, perfect for those wanting to be close to Palma but not have a lengthy transfer after landing. Other, even more beautiful beaches can be found across the island.
In the south, Caló des Moro is a picturesque cove with crystalline waters. It was a true treasure to discover during my off-season visit, as it would surely be overrun during summer months. Near Sóller, Cala Banyalbufar beach offers stunning views as vineyard terraces lead up from it, making it another must-visit spot.
Palma de Mallorca
The capital city of Mallorca, Palma, is dominated by the Santa Maria Cathedral, a grand Gothic building that rivals the centers of most Spanish cities. Inside, you'll find a combination of intricate architecture showcasing the cathedral's growth since its 13th-century construction.
Next to the church stands the Royal Palace of La Almudaina, displaying the island's Moorish history. The vast Arabic fortress served as the royal residence on the island, and its stone rooms with their arched ceilings are truly impressive. The 15th-century Lonja de Mallorca is another fascinating building worth exploring.
