Economic conflict's impact: Olga Volynska peruses displays in the "Antitext" exhibition
In the heart of Leipzig, the German Museum of Books and Writing is currently hosting a touring exhibition titled "Antitext". This exhibition, conceived by the Museum of Literature in Charkiv, Ukraine, offers a profound exploration into Ukraine’s cultural history through its literary tradition.
The "Antitext" exhibition, on display until August 7, 2025, delves into the censorship, hiding, suppression, and destruction of texts that do not fit into the official ideology, especially highlighting the impact of the totalitarian Soviet regime on Ukrainian culture. It serves as a poignant reminder that war not only destroys cities and people but also cultural identities.
To add depth to the exhibition, a series of events have been organised, including readings with Ukrainian authors. On August 7 at 6 pm, Olga Volynska, a journalist and human rights activist from Dnipro, will read from her new book "How the War Changes Us". Her book tells the story of the courageous resistance of artists in the war, shedding light on the resilience of Ukraine's cultural scene.
Olga Volynska's reading will be in Ukrainian with simultaneous German translation, allowing a broader audience to engage with the powerful narrative.
Khrystyna Kozlovska, an author and publisher, has played a significant role in organising this event and initiating the exhibition "before/after" on destroyed Ukrainian cultural sites. The "before/after" exhibition, scheduled for 2023, will further underscore the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict on Ukraine's cultural heritage.
Peace in Ukraine is not yet achieved, and the large-scale invasion has been ongoing for approximately 1,200 days. The "Antitext" exhibition, however, serves as a beacon of hope, aiming to contribute to enlightenment and the preservation of Ukraine's cultural identity.
The "Antitext" exhibition is not only a testament to Ukraine’s rich literary heritage but also a reflection of the transformations and challenges faced by Ukrainian culture in the context of war and resilience. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating cultural diversity in times of conflict.
