Economy Class Assessment on Vietnam Airlines: User's Perception and Analysis
Blazing Through the Skies with Vietnam Airlines
Hop on board for a feisty, spirited take on your journey with Vietnam Airlines, as we uncover the nitty-gritty of their short-haul economy product aboard the Airbus A321.
Riding the Skies, VN-A397 StyleDelving into the gritty details, this 12-year-old Airbus A321-200, leased by Vietnam Airlines, is one out of 62 in their fleet. A mélange of A321CEOs and A321NEOs, this baby is mostly used on domestic flights. But don't let its age fool you—VN-A397 is rock-solid and ready to soar!
Buckle Up and Let's RollNow, let's talk the nitty-gritty of the two classes on VN-A397 — Business and Economy. With a 2-2 layout for Business and a 3-3 arrangement for Economy, you'll find 16 of each. Sure, we initially wound up in 31A, but fate had other plans, and we winded up in the bulkhead seat 10C, just behind the Business Class partition, scoring a sweet upgrade!
Hopping from Singapore to Saigon CityFlying between Singapore and the bustling Ho Chi Minh City is a seasonally popular route for travelers seeking cultural experiences. As far as airlines go, four carriers battle it out with 68 weekly flights, with Vietnam Airlines claiming the lion's share using narrow-body aircraft. The scene's quite active, with routes that were once flown by VN's flagship Boeing 787 Dreamliners, giving way to the steady demand for this service aboard the A321 in the present day.
Strapped In and Ready to RollVietnam Airlines' A321 economy seating is straightforward, practical, and fitting for the economical ticket price, similar to other short-haul economy products. Each seat sports a standard economy-class design, equipped with cushioned fabric, an 81 cm (32-inch) seat pitch, 18-inch width, and a backrest recline of 11.5 cm. With the bulkhead row, we were lucky to enjoy ample legroom, giving the seats a surprisingly spacious feel.
Flying with a SmileSetting foot onboard, our expectations were sky-high, coming off a stint with Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways just a few months prior. Vietnam Airlines, however, didn't disappoint. Like a warm, beaming sun, their hospitality shone from boarding to deplaning, with cabin crew warmly interacting with passengers throughout the trip. It's as unimaginable as eating cereal without milk, truly impossible to fathom a Vietnam Airlines cabin crew without a smile.
A Mid-Flight Meal Fit for a KingOur mouthwatering two-hour culinary adventure to Ho Chi Minh City included a meal service reminiscent of a late lunch, served after reaching 10,000 feet. Craving some flavorsome protein, I feasted on tender, tasty chicken with rice in sauce, accompanied by seasoned veggies. If there’s one thing this meal reinforced, it's that Asian carriers, particularly Vietnam Airlines, excel at delivering Oriental-inspired catering.
Enjoy the Ride, but Don't Expect IFEWithout a personal IFE screen on offer in either Economy or Business Class on our A321, entertaining yourself falls on your own shoulders. But don't worry, through mobile-based entertainment, you can access the same IFE system available on seat-back screens of Vietnam Airlines' widebody aircraft. It's just important to remember that the WiFi available only caters to the IFE system and does not support internet browsing.
Use Your Own JudgmentWhen it comes to Vietnam Airlines, it's all about balance—serving up a decent flight experience without breaking the bank. The truth is, this airline competes fiercely with heavyweights like Singapore Airlines, setting the regional benchmark for quality, while also battling it out with budget carrier VietJet Air. Where they truly shine is in offering affordable fares with included meal service, entertainment, and exceptional hospitality on short, two-hour regional flights.
Throw Caution to the WindIn short, Vietnam Airlines offers an economical option for short-haul flights within Asia, providing a standard but efficient service with average meal quality. However, it might not top the charts in terms of comfort or amenities compared to some other airlines, particularly in terms of seat space and meal quality. If comfort reigns supreme to you, other airlines might be better suited to your needs, while Vietnam Airlines shines for those seeking efficiency and affordability.
Soar the Skies, Your Way- For Comfort Connoisseurs: Consider airlines like China Airlines or others with more spacious seating and better meal quality.- For Efficiency and Budget Travelers: Vietnam Airlines is the perfect pal for short-haul flights within Asia.
