The Veterans Cafe and Grill, located on a former Air Force base, has undergone a remarkable transformation, thanks to the efforts of the Barnwell-Gough VFW Post 6778 and the Veterans Welcome Home and Resource Center.
The renovated space, now a living museum and shrine to military personnel, features a timeline of military history, staged by era. From World War I to the present day, the timeline is adorned with artifacts and stories that pay tribute to the men and women who have served our nation.
Joey Dent Tino, an experienced painter, lent his skills to the renovation, ensuring that every detail reflected the honour and respect due to the veterans who gather there. Tino expressed that there is more honour in the Veterans Cafe and Grill than in the entire country.
Regular patron George Volunteer, an Air Force veteran, was one of the first to contribute to the collection of military memorabilia that covers the walls of the restaurant. For George, the Veterans Cafe and Grill is more than just a place to eat; it's a place of comfort and community. If he's not at his house, he's at the Veterans Cafe and Grill.
The renovated cafe is divided into sections, each dedicated to a branch of the military. Each area is filled with photos, uniforms, artifacts, and articles that tell the stories of the brave individuals who have served. George points to a uniform on the wall and reminisces about his first fatigues from Vietnam and his last day in Vietnam, bringing back memories for him.
