Four Imminent Exhibitions Worth Visiting at Mia This Autumn

The Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) is set to host a series of captivating exhibits from September to January 2026, showcasing a diverse range of artworks from various periods and cultures.

First on the list is "Gatsby at 100," an exhibit focusing on F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel "The Great Gatsby" and its impact on visual art. The exhibit, which will be on display from September 13, 2025, to March 22, 2026, will feature books, paintings, and works on paper that are rarely on view. The first edition "The Great Gatsby" book jacket will be on loan from Princeton University Library, and the exhibit will bring together works from Mia's collection that embody the decadence, excess, and social upheaval reflected in Fitzgerald's prolific novel.

From September 27, 2025, to January 4, 2026, Mia will also present "José María Velasco: A View of Mexico," an exhibition featuring works primarily by José María Velasco himself, with possible contributions or contextual works by other Mexican artists of the 19th century to complement Velasco's landscape paintings. Admission to this exhibit is free.

Another noteworthy exhibit is "Royal Bronzes: Cambodian Art of the Divine," a collaboration between Mia, Museé Guimet, and the National Museum of Cambodia. The exhibit, which will be on display from October 25, 2025, to January 18, 2026, highlights more than 200 objects from Cambodia's Khmer Empire. The exhibit reveals a blend of artistic mastery, religious devotion, and royal power in Khmer bronze artistry, offering a rare glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of ancient Cambodia.

Lastly, "Timber! Art and Woodwork at the Fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire" will be on display at Mia from August 30, 2025, to January 4, 2026. This exhibit explores two outcomes for the sawmill's timber: a wooden bridge in another painting by Schiele and avant-garde wooden furniture, created mostly by Schiele's friend and mentor, designer Josef Hoffmann. The painting "Sawmill (1913)" by Egon Schiele, which features a mill surrounded by piles of freshly cut timber, will be on loan from a private collection. The mill in the painting can be read as a symbol of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which was in a precarious state in 1913.

General admission for the "Royal Bronzes" exhibit is $20. All other exhibits, including "Gatsby at 100" and "José María Velasco: A View of Mexico," will be free for admission.

These exhibits promise to offer a rich and diverse cultural experience, showcasing the beauty, history, and significance of art from various periods and cultures. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of art at Mia.
