France Opens Cultural Center in Saudi Arabia - France Opens Villa Hegra Cultural Center in Saudi Arabia
France has opened the Villa Hegra, a new cultural center in Saudi Arabia, modeled after the Villa Medici in Rome. The center aims to host artists for extended stays and showcase exhibitions and performances. The opening was described as a strong political statement by Jean-Yves Le Drian, former French foreign minister.
The Villa Hegra will initially feature an exhibition of works by designer Jean-Michel Othoniel and a display focused on Auguste Rodin's hands. A performance by dancer Rachid Ouramdane is also planned. This cultural expansion aligns with France's recent growth of similar institutions in Japan, the USA, and Spain. The center's future plans include the construction of a department dedicated to contemporary Arab culture, in collaboration with the Paris-based Museum Centre Pompidou. Rachida Dati, the French Culture Minister, played a key role in the opening of this significant cultural site.
