France Praises Vietnam's IUU Fishing Efforts, Boosts Climate Cooperation

France has praised Vietnam's efforts to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, reaffirming its support to help Vietnam remove its IUU 'yellow card'. The meeting took place on September 30, 2023, between Vietnamese Acting Minister Thắng and French Minister for Ecological Transition Agnes Pannier-Runacher in Paris.

The two nations have agreed to enhance their collaboration, moving from dialogue to concrete actions. France, which has reduced its carbon emissions by 30% since the 1990s and is among the top five contributors to international environmental projects, hopes to assist Vietnam in its environmental goals.

Vietnam's Acting Minister Thắng acknowledged the country's limited capacity and its aim to maintain over 10% growth over the next decade while balancing economic development with environmental protection. France wishes to engage in detailed dialogue with Vietnam on its strategies to achieve net zero by 2050 and assist with NDCs, carbon credit exchange, and the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The precise goal of the French-Vietnamese cooperation within the Just Energy Transition Partnerships is not explicitly detailed.

The meeting has elevated France and Vietnam's relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership. Both sides are committed to tackling climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution through domestic policy and international cooperation.
