Keeping Safe at Étretat's Iconic Cliffs: A New Tourist Regulation

Frequently visited famous landmark for travelers snapping selfies

The picturesque chalk cliffs of Étretat in Normandy, France, are Instagram-worthy gems, attracting millions of snap-happy tourists yearly. But, alarmingly, these fragile beauties are also a perilous playground for daredevils seeking thrilling selfies.

To maintain safety and prevent accidents, new rules have been introduced by the seaside town of Étretat. The deteriorating condition of the coast, with the looming danger of tumbling rocks, necessitates these precautions, according to the new regulations.

Selfie-seekers need to steer clear of the rocky arches beneath the cliffs' peaks, and only the beach alongside the promenade in Étretat is accessible. Unfortunately, three prominent rock formations have been off-limits since the announcement, as well.

Fine Print

Tourists feeling the urge to capture the cliffs' breathtaking vistas need to remember the risks involved. With the cliffs standing approximately 90 meters high, the temptation for those seeking a decent shot can lead to disastrous endings.

Visitors are now limited to approaching the cliff's edge only up to five meters, which is partially for their safety and partially to protect the delicate environment of the cliffs. In case the ban is disregarded, or if visitors attempt to bypass safety barriers, they will face at least a €35 fine. To add to the financial deterrent, the fire department will also levy charges for rescue operations, except in extreme cases, if tourists need assistance climbing down the cliffs.

The fire department had already raised concerns in 2022, warning about the risks associated with taking photographs on the cliffs, especially on the rocks. Since then, more tourists have been spotted treading dangerously close to the edge while trying to score the perfect shot.
