Germany Sets New Stem Cell Donation Record, Saving Lives Worldwide
Germany plays a pivotal role in global stem cell donation. In 2024, the country set a new record with 8,349 donations, contributing around 30% of all worldwide donations. The German Bone Marrow Donor Registry (ZKRD), based in Ulm, has been coordinating these life-saving searches since 1992.
The ZKRD, the world's largest national registry, ensures each search is quick, anonymous, and globally connected. About three-quarters of German donations go abroad, with one-quarter staying in Germany. Each donation represents a potential lifesaver for people with blood cancer.
The number of registered potential donors in Germany has grown significantly, now surpassing ten million. This increase reflects the country's commitment to supporting those in need, both at home and internationally.
Germany's stem cell donation program, coordinated by the ZKRD, continues to make a substantial impact worldwide. With a record number of donations in 2024 and a growing registry, Germany remains a key player in the global fight against blood cancer.
