Germany's Tourism Overnight Stays in June 2025 Report a 3.8% Boost Compared to Previous Year
Germany Sees Record-Breaking Domestic Tourism in June 2025
Good news for the German tourism industry as the number of overnight stays by domestic guests surges in June 2025. According to preliminary results from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of overnight stays by domestic guests increased by 7.4% to 42.8 million in June 2025 compared to the same month in 2024.
This increase in overnight stays could potentially lead to increased revenue for accommodation establishments across Germany. The rise in domestic travel was driven by strong demand for business and holiday travel, reaching a record level despite international challenges.
The first half of 2025 also saw a rise in overnight stays, with a total of 223.3 million, slightly above the previous record. The number of overnight stays by domestic guests in the first six months of 2025 was 187.0 million, an increase of 0.8% compared to the same period in 2024.
However, the number of overnight stays by foreign guests in the first half of 2025 was 36.4 million, a decrease of 3.2% compared to the same period in 2024. This decrease may be due to fewer major events like the UEFA European Football Championship in 2024, which attracted many international visitors.
June 2025 saw a 3.8% increase in overnight stays compared to June 2024. However, the number of overnight stays by foreign guests decreased by 12.7% to 7.6 million in June 2025 compared to the same month in 2024.
The Whitsun holidays in some federal states in June 2025 may have contributed to the increase in overnight stays by domestic guests in that month. In June 2025, Germany recorded 50.5 million overnight stays, making it the highest on record for a single month in the country.
The increase in domestic overnight stays was driven by strong local demand and stable travel intentions, while the decrease in foreign overnight stays stemmed largely from the absence of a special 2024 event and structural barriers to international arrivals.
The first half of 2025 suggests a continued recovery in the German tourism industry following the COVID-19 pandemic. The increase in overnight stays in June 2025 may indicate a positive trend for the rest of 2025 in the industry.
