Honoring World Poetry Day Celebration

Celebrate World Poetry Day on March 21 with the American Writers Museum (AWM)! Explore a wealth of poetry-related content, from author talks and podcasts to blogs and exhibits.

Join our upcoming "Get Lit: Verses & Visions" event in April, which will be a poetry-themed happy hour complete with an open mic. More details and tickets can be found on our website.

The AWM has been honored to host four former U.S. Poet Laureates, including Joy Harjo, Natasha Trethewey, Juan Felipe Herrera, and Billy Collins, for author programs. Listen to their insightful conversations on the AWM Author Talks podcast, including Joy Harjo's keynote address at the American Writers Festival in May 2022.

Our podcast network also features engaging conversations with other poets, such as Glory Edim and Nikki Giovanni discussing the life and work of Maya Angelou, Louie Pérez discussing his multi-faceted book "Good Morning, Aztlán", and Saeed Jones sharing his approach to merging poetry and memoir in "How We Fight For Our Lives".

For more World Poetry Day content, visit our blog. Learn about the enduring legacy of Walt Whitman, the life and influence of Langston Hughes during the Harlem Renaissance, and the Beat Poets of the 50s and 60s.

While the AWM does not currently have specific events or resources dedicated to National Poetry Month in April, other platforms such as NaPoWriMo offer daily prompts and global participation throughout the month. For students, the Poe Museum hosts a separate poetry contest in line with National Poetry Month.
