Indigenous Empowerment: Radio Mattoli Amplifies Voices in Kerala's Wayanad

The Karuthal Project, an initiative of the indigenous community, is empowering Indigenous communities in Kerala's Wayanad District, India. This project has proven to be a catalyst for change, instilling pride and confidence in Indigenous people and helping them reclaim their heritage. Radio Mattoli, the first media outlet in the region to advocate for indigenous people's rights, has amplified their voices and struggles.

The project began by training Tribal youth volunteers in journalism and program creation. These volunteers then engaged their communities effectively, using the platform to discuss their culture, express concerns, and advocate for disaster preparedness and climate mitigation. Radio Mattoli conducted 10 narrowcasting sessions in Tribal hamlets across Wayanad District to broadcast cultural knowledge and concerns.

In 2024, Radio Mattoli received a significant boost. It received a grant from the French Defence Innovation Agency to support communication projects of indigenous communities worldwide. This grant allowed Radio Mattoli to expand its reach and impact. Additionally, Cultural Survival's Indigenous Community Fund provided $480,000 in grants to 57 indigenous communication projects in 25 countries, including the Karuthal Project.

The Karuthal Project and Radio Mattoli have empowered Wayanad's indigenous populations, raising awareness of their rich culture and promoting their rights. Through these initiatives, indigenous people are reasserting their identity and standing as equals in the global community.
