Italy Braces for Nationwide Transport Strike on 3 October

Italy braces for a nationwide transport strike on 3 October, with air, rail, sea, and local services expected to be severely disrupted. The strike, called by union leaders in response to Italy's handling of the Global Sumud Flotilla interception, is set to coincide with mass protests across the country.

The cyberattack has already affected several major airports, including Berlin Brandenburg, Frankfurt, Munich, and London Heathrow, causing delays and longer waiting times. Travellers are advised to check with their travelers insurance before departure and allow extra time for journeys, especially in areas where demonstrations are planned. Demonstrations are expected in major cities such as Rome, Milan, and Bologna, with road closures and delays likely near protest sites.

The strike is expected to hit national rail services hard, with major lines such as Hamburg–Berlin and Mannheim–Dortmund experiencing rerouted ICE services and other regional limitations. The Italian transport ministry's strike calendar provides the latest updates. Between now and the end of the year, there are 40 planned strikes in Italy's transport sector.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has accused the unions of exploiting the flotilla incident for political purposes. Despite the disruptions, Italy's civil aviation authority ENAC reminds travellers that flights scheduled between specific hours must still operate, and services to and from Sicily and Sardinia are guaranteed. Travellers are advised to stay informed and plan their journeys accordingly.
