Kazakhstan-Mongolia air service set to pilot direct flights
Headline: Kazakhstan and Mongolia Strengthen Transport Ties, Discuss New Highway and Flight Routes
Mongolia's Minister of Roads and Transportation, Borkhuu Delerhan, recently met with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, Murat Nurtleu, to discuss the strengthening of transport ties between the two countries.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the project to build the Kazakhstan-Russia-Mongolia highway, which is expected to reduce the distance between the countries by over 800 kilometers. This strategic highway could significantly improve land-based transport corridors and boost trade between Kazakhstan and Mongolia.
In addition, the parties confirmed plans to develop international transport corridors and hold a trilateral meeting of ministers of transport from Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Russia in July in China. This meeting will provide an opportunity to further discuss the highway project and other transport initiatives.
Regarding air connectivity, there has been recent development in Mongolia's direct flight network. MIAT Mongolian Airlines is launching new direct international flights starting November 2025, including twice-weekly flights between Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia) and Singapore, along with new routes to Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul, and Beijing. These expansions will enhance Mongolia’s global connectivity and potentially facilitate regional trade and tourism.
However, no explicit announcement has been made yet for direct flights between Kazakhstan and Mongolia or specifically to Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan. Uzbekistan and Mongolia are exploring new direct flights between Tashkent and Ulaanbaatar by the end of 2025, aiming to boost business and tourism ties. This reflects a broader push in Central Asia and Mongolia to improve economic cooperation and air connectivity.
Kazakhstan is actively enhancing direct flight routes with China, aiming to increase travel and transport links. The growth of export-import cargo transportation was also discussed, with joint projects providing Mongolia with access to the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route and other major Eurasian logistics corridors through Kazakhstan's territory. The cargo transportation includes Kazakh grain, oilseeds, and equipment such as locomotives and passenger wagons.
The expansion of direct flights by MIAT Mongolian Airlines, especially to major Asian hubs, can improve Mongolia’s access to international markets, aiding trade and tourism. The potential new flight route connecting Uzbekistan and Mongolia signals increasing regional integration within Central Asia, which may eventually support better land- and air-based transport corridors. Kazakhstan’s flight expansions with China strengthen a key East-West transport and economic corridor, but the absence of direct Kazakhstan-Mongolia routes suggests the transport corridor between these two may still rely largely on ground or indirect air links.
If direct flights between Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Issyk-Kul were introduced in the future, they could significantly shorten travel times, facilitate tourism growth in Kyrgyzstan, and enhance cross-border trade logistics in the region. The developments indirectly support regional transport corridor integration with promising trade and tourism benefits once more direct air links emerge.
