Lignin Industries Secures €3.9M for Tree-Derived Plastic Expansion
Lignin Industries, a pioneer in bio-based materials, has secured €3.9 million in funding. This investment will fuel the expansion of its innovative thermoplastic derived from trees. Meanwhile, Smart Planet Technologies, another leader in eco-friendly solutions, has developed EarthCoating, a protective coating made from biopolymers.
EarthCoating, launched in 2021, is a testament to Smart Planet Technologies' commitment to sustainability. The product, Eco Works 100, contains 100% USDA certified biobased content, making it an excellent alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics.
A recent study revealed that Eco Works 100 compost performed exceptionally well. After two weeks, it showed a nearly identical germination rate and seedling growth yield compared to a control. This demonstrates its potential to replace conventional plastics in various applications, such as shopping bags or waste disposal bags.
Cortec, a global leader in protective coatings, has certified Eco Works 100 packaging film as industrially compostable by TÜV Austria. This certification ensures that the product can decompose safely alongside organic waste in industrial composting facilities without causing ecotoxicity to the soil.
With the recent funding, Lignin Industries is poised to accelerate the scale-up of its tree-derived thermoplastic. Meanwhile, Smart Planet Technologies' Eco Works 100 continues to prove its worth as a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics.
