Pre-flight excitement is brewing! A couple of weeks prior, I received Abercrombie & Kent’s branded package containing a sand-colored duffle bag and a safari hat perfect for our Sahara night. The preparations are well thought out - there’s a packing list and all the requirements (vaccines, visas, etc.) is sorted. However, an A&K rep checks in to ensure I'm keeping up!
Upon landing in Benin late at night, I’m escorted into my suite at the Sofitel Cotonou Marina Hotel & Spa, courtesy of Abercrombie & Kent. Day one reveals historical sites like the Sacred Forest and Ganvie, earning West Africa the nickname 'Venice of Africa.' The evening brings a BBQ, traditional Benin attire, and a lively group of travelers who've formed tight-knit bonds cruising together for two weeks already.
The Flight Experience
Day Two introduces the A&K jet – a custom Boeing 757 packed with 50 comfy, lie-flat leather seats in a cozy 2x2 configuration. Guests usually keep their seats for the entire trip but later swap them during the soirée. The unique vessel brims with treasures, from South African wine to Moroccan rugs - yout wonder what else is hidden away.
Our destination is Morocco, and the guests' fervor increases as we've all been eagerly waiting for this part of the trip. We touch down in Errachidia Airport, where black 4x4′s await for off-roading fun through the Sahara's golden dunes. At the campsite, A&K impresses once more with Berber-style tents, shower amenities, and countless lanterns for a magical, premier-class twist on a traditional desert camp. The night's festivities commence with a captivating Gnaoua tribesmen dance, followed by a Moroccan dinner and an astronomer lecture under the sparkling night sky.
Marrakech Madness
The following morning's sunrise over the dunes is nothing short of breathtaking, then it's time to bid farewell to the Sahara and explore vibrant Morocco. We rest up at the Oberoi Marrakech, a luxurious retreat offering idyllic villas, lounge chairs, and a glimpse at the city's cultural landmarks.
Cultural Exploration
On day four, guests can do as much or as little as they fancy. We meander through Marrakech's Djemaa el-Fna Square, absorb the beauty of Jardin Majorelle, a colorful botanical garden with strong Yves Saint Laurent ties, and revel in the decadence of Marrakech as the trip concludes. The final night is a memorable surprise - horsemen lead us to Palm Grove for an unforgettable bonfire feast, complete with camels, a horse show, and a fiery farewell finale for the trip of a lifetime.
