Osnabrück Celebrates Peace with Hobbyhorse Parade & Light Show
Osnabrück, a city rich in history, celebrates the Westphalian Peace annually with a unique event: a hobbyhorse riding parade. This year's Peace Day, held on October 9 at 5:30 PM, starts at the cathedral school's yard and ends with a spectacular light show on the market square.
The parade, led by children mainly from the fourth grade, winds through the city center. They ride handmade hobbyhorses and wear colorful hats, creating a vibrant spectacle. The route culminates at the town hall steps, where the mayor greets the young participants with a traditional treat: pretzels.
The event concludes with a dazzling light show, featuring fire juggling, a captivating theater performance, group singing, and entertainment by Stephan Rodefeld and the Rock'n Royals. The light show illuminates the market square, bringing the community together in a festive atmosphere.
The Osnabrück hobbyhorse riding event, inspired by the von Dincklage sisters in 1875 and initiated by Ludwig Bät in 1948, has become a beloved children's festival. It not only entertains but also educates, introducing young minds to the importance of peace and tolerance. The event is a testament to the city's commitment to preserving its rich history and promoting its values.
