Whitsun Road Trip Fuel Saving Tips

Gearing up for a road trip this Whitsun weekend? Here's a quick guide on where to fill up for the most savings along popular European routes. Keep in mind, prices are based on data from early June 2025:

Southbound Adventures

Fuel up before you cross the border if your destination is Germany. Neighbors Austria offers cheaper gasoline (EUR 1.506/liter) and diesel (EUR 1.363/liter) compared to Deutschland. But if you're just passing through Austria, consider heading further to Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, or Slovakia for cheaper fuel. Prices in Italy are more expensive than Austria, but Slovakia, especially for diesel, offers better deals. Swizzland? Not so much - even more expensive than Germany.

Westward Ho!

France and Belgium are almost on par with Germany, making the trip to Spain a prime spot for savings. Fuel up in Belgium if you're a diesel driver (EUR 1.433/liter), but petrol may be cheaper in the Netherlands (EUR 1.607/liter) or Luxembourg (EUR 1.351/liter for petrol and EUR 1.207/liter for diesel). Luxembourg, nestled in the heart of Western Europe, is the cheapest fuel stop in this direction.

Eastward Bound

Whether you're heading towards Poland or the Czech Republic, you'll find cheaper fuel there than in Germany. Both countries offer savings of around 35 cents for petrol! The Czech Republic even has cheaper diesel at EUR 1.170/liter. Keep in mind that Prices in the Baltics and Hungary are a tad more expensive but still cheaper than Germany.

Northbound Voyagers

Sweden's the place to be for fuel savings, especially if you're driving a diesel vehicle. Super diesel is 9 cents cheaper in Sweden (EUR 1.252/liter) than in Germany. Petrol is cheaper too, at EUR 1.610/liter. Denmark, however, is not the best option, with petrol priced at EUR 1.533/liter (23 cents more expensive) and diesel at EUR 1.418/liter (14 cents more).

Remember, prices vary based on taxes, location, petrol station, and time of day. So, although it's tempting to adapt your route for cheaper fuel, consider the time and environmental impact before you set out on unexpected detours.

Instead, prepare ahead by topping off your tank the evening before your trip when prices are usually a few cents cheaper than in the morning. Safe travels!
