Reduced Trek Fees for Triund Trek: Himachal Pradesh Government Announces 50% Discount

Article:

The state government of Himachal Pradesh has embodied adventure seekers' dreams by slashing the trekking fee for the renowned Trek to Triund in Dharamshala by half. This welcomed move comes in response to the initial fees proposed by the Ecotourism Society of the Forest Department, which faced fierce resistance from various stakeholders.

In a recent statement, an official from the Forest Department announced that the reduction in fees was actioned following the directive of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Now, the Dharamshala Forest Circle generously offers a 50% discount on both entry and tenting fees for Triund and several other trekking routes.

Pro Tips for Budget Backpackers:

If you're a newbie to backpacking, here are some handy tips to make your journey smoother:

  1. Plan Ahead: Research your destination, treks, and accommodations before embarking on your adventure.
  2. Travel Light: Choose versatile, lightweight gear that suits your needs, keeping in mind the trek's difficulty level.
  3. Stay Connected: Carry a portable charger to ensure your phone is always ON for emergency or navigation purposes.
  4. Budget Wisely: Estimate your costs and set realistic financial goals, allowing for contingencies.
  5. Embrace the Unexpected: Be open to unexpected challenges and experiences; they're often the best part of any adventure!

According to the official statement, the entry fee for the Triund trek has been brought down from Rs 200 to Rs 100 per person per day. Meanwhile, the tenting fee for two people, incorporating the entry fee, has decreased from Rs 1,100 to Rs 550. Registered local guides associated with the Tourism Department under the HP Miscellaneous Adventure Activities Rules, 2021, will be exempt from any charges.

The escalated trekking fees met considerable resistance from local trekking-related businesses and the hotel association, who argued that the fees led to a substantial decrease in the number of trekkers and budget tourists visiting the area.

Initially, the Ecotourism Society began collecting fees in December of the previous year and established a check post at Gallu on the Triund trek to facilitate the process. In a meeting on November 23, the society also decided to confine the daily number of tourists to 400 and allow only 40 tourists to stay overnight at Triund, with permission for the pitching of only 20 tents.

hotel and Restaurant Association of Dharamshala aired their concerns to the state government, calling out the high tariff and the absence of essential amenities. In response, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu prompted the Forest Department to lower the trekking fee.

With the reduction in trekking fees, Dharamshala is hoping for an influx of trekkers and budget tourists, making the Triund trek more accessible and affordable for adventure enthusiasts.
