Reviving the historic allure of Fuengirola
Fuengirola Kicks Off Major Heritage Restoration Initiative
Fuengirola, a town on Spain's southern coast, has embarked on an ambitious investment plan to preserve and restore its rich historical identity. The plan, worth €240,000, aims to revitalize key artistic and monumental elements, including fountains, murals, and historic cannons.
The restoration journey commenced with the Mare Nostrum fountain at the Mercacentro roundabout. The project includes the replacement of a vandalism-damaged seagull sculpture, marking the first step in this broader heritage restoration initiative [1][4]. As of August 2025, the restoration efforts are underway, with the Mare Nostrum fountain project already active.
Among the upcoming projects, the contract for the restoration of the murals has already been awarded, and the replacement of the seagull sculpture will take place right after the Feria del Rosario. The murals by artists Pedro Escalona and Enrique Brinkmann, part of Fuengirola's Open-Air Museum, will undergo a radical restoration, costing €111,000 from the Municipio Turístico programme.
The restoration of other artistic and monumental elements in Fuengirola is also included in the investment plan. Beyond the Mare Nostrum fountain, the historical cannons on top of Castillo Sohail, the Paseo Marítimo, and the Museum are scheduled for a makeover. An €88,000 contract has been allocated for the restoration of the historical cannons, lasting 18 months.
The investment plan is a significant move towards preserving Fuengirola's colourful heritage. The restoration and maintenance of the Mare Nostrum fountain is one of the initiatives under the plan, with the replacement of the seagull sculpture being part of a €45,788, four-year contract dedicated to maintaining the town's public fountains and sculptures.
While specific completion dates for the entire plan, including the murals and historical cannons, are not detailed in the available sources, further updates are expected as the restoration progresses. The investment plan's restoration efforts extend beyond the Mare Nostrum fountain to include multiple historical sites in Fuengirola, ensuring the preservation of its rich historical identity.
