In the coming weeks, the I-81 Viaduct Project in Syracuse will involve bridge work that will affect various roadways in the city. The state Department of Transportation has announced these changes, which will take place from September 8 to September 20.
Motorists should be aware of the following lane closures and ramp closure:
- I-81 southbound will have lane restrictions between Exits 23A-23B-22 (Hiawatha Blvd./ Destiny USA Dr./Bear St.) and Exit 20 (Franklin St./West St.) from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. weeknights.
- I-81 northbound will have lane restrictions between Exit 18 (Adams St./Harrison St.) and Exit 23 (Park St./Hiawatha Blvd.) from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. weeknights.
- I-690 westbound will be reduced to one lane between Exit 14 (Teall Ave.) and Exit 13 (Townsend St./Downtown) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. between Monday and Friday.
- Interstate 81 and Interstate 690 westbound will also be reduced to one lane in Syracuse this week.
- The Sunset Avenue on-ramp to I-81 northbound will be closed from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. weeknights during the same period.
To bypass the construction zone, motorists are advised to use I-690 East and State Route 298. Additionally, motorists are directed to follow the signed detour that directs traffic north on Sunset Avenue, to east on Bear Street, to north on Lodi Street, to I-81 northbound.
The lane restrictions and ramp closure will occur between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. each night and will take place from Monday, September 8, to Saturday, September 20. The state Department of Transportation urges motorists to slow down in and drive responsibly in work zones.
