Sailing aboard a vessel for more than a year led to our decision to abandon conventional living
==============================================================
Living on a sailboat for 1.5 years has been an eye-opening experience for one individual, who embarked on this nomadic lifestyle along with their partner and a greyhound in March 2021. The journey has been filled with challenges, lessons, and memories that will last a lifetime.
One of the most significant adjustments has been managing the limited water supply onboard. Showers, a luxury often taken for granted on land, have been a rare treat on the sailboat. The thick layer of salt and grease in the individual's hair made them insecure and uncomfortable, and limited water meant going up to a month without a freshwater shower. Soap didn't lather well in saltwater, and the individual never felt truly clean.
Daily routines have also required constant adjustments due to the boat's limited space, maintenance needs, and the environment. Dealing with boat systems like batteries (which often require expensive replacements) and anchor maintenance can be a daily headache; tasks such as installing or troubleshooting equipment can be time-consuming and stressful. Anchoring also demands vigilance to avoid dragging anchor or collisions with other boats, and being plated at anchor can cause ongoing worries about weather changes and boat security. Furthermore, the pace of travel on sailboats is slow, affecting travel plans and daily time management.
The confined spaces and constant need to adapt to the environment have also led to feelings of homesickness and missing the stability and conveniences of shore life. The individual missed celebrating birthdays and holidays with loved ones while sailing, and longed to develop a daily routine off the sailboat due to constant unfamiliarity with their location. Homesickness was more frequent than anticipated, and the individual found themselves looking forward to the next chapter on land.
Despite the challenges, living on a sailboat has helped the individual appreciate simple things in life more. The individual carried memories of beautiful beaches and diverse cultures from the sailing experience, and found joy in the small victories, like the ease of obtaining and storing food. The individual also missed sharing experiences like ice cream with family and friends while sailing.
As the individual embarks on the next chapter of their life, they carry with them a newfound appreciation for the comforts of home and the simplicity of life ashore. They will cherish the memories of their time at sea and the lessons they learned about adaptation, resilience, and the importance of community. The nomadic lifestyle may have been challenging, but it has been an unforgettable adventure that has enriched their life in ways they never expected.
