Discovering a Hidden Gem: Caladesi Island State Park in Florida

Caladesi Island State Park, a pristine haven nestled on the Gulf Coast of Florida, reopened to visitors on July 3, 2025, offering a unique blend of relaxation and exploration. This hidden gem, located about 13 miles north of Honeymoon Island State Park and 8 miles northwest of Dunedin, has been named the second-best beach in the US by Dr. Beach in 2022.

Caladesi Island State Park boasts over four miles of pristine beach, perfect for sunbathing and shelling, especially near low tide. Beyond the beach, visitors can hike nature trails, kayak through a three-mile mangrove trail, and fish for a variety of species like snook, redfish, trout, or flounder (a Florida fishing license may be needed).

The park offers picnic areas and two rentable picnic pavilions for groups, plus a playground for children. The ferry ride from Honeymoon Island State Park is a pleasant way to reach Caladesi Island, avoiding a strenuous two-mile walk from Clearwater Beach.

Honeymoon Island State Park, nearby, adds to the experience with a dog beach, more picnic options, playgrounds, several nature trails, a café, and a nature center. It’s accessible by car, bike, or foot and offers scenic spots for sunbathing, fishing, and kayaking, especially along the Dunedin Causeway.

The Dunedin Causeway, connecting Honeymoon Island to the mainland, is popular for kayak launches, fishing, swimming, walking, jogging, cycling, and watching sunsets. Its calm, shallow waters on the south side make it family-friendly for wading children.

The town of Dunedin nearby is known as a hidden gem with many trails—including one leading to a dog beach—festivals, museums, bike rides, and other recreational opportunities, providing a cultural and nature-rich complement to beach activities.

Visitors can access Caladesi Island via a personal boat or a ferry from Honeymoon Island State Park, with departures scheduled every 30 minutes. The paddling trail on Caladesi Island offers kayak rentals for about $25 per paddler.

Caladesi Island State Park hosts a bird sanctuary, the Great Florida Birding Trail, and is home to various wildlife, including gopher tortoises, osprey, turtles, snakes, raccoons, black skimmers, American oystercatchers, Piping Plover, Red Knot, Brown Pelicans, and more. Thousands of undisturbed travel destinations are available across the US, including in Wisconsin, South Carolina, Virginia, and Florida.

Caladesi Island, with its quiet and serene atmosphere, is an ideal escape from fast-paced routines, as suggested by Mike Kaplan. Despite its popularity, overcrowding is not a common problem here, making it a peaceful retreat for nature lovers and beach enthusiasts alike.
