Unbuilt Berlin: A Glimpse into the City's Bold Architectural Dreams
Berlin, a city known for its constant transformation, has seen numerous architectural projects proposed but never realised. These unbuilt designs offer a glimpse into the city's evolving architectural trends and aspirations.
In 1969, Berlin architect Engelbert Kremser envisioned an amorphous alternative to the current Europa Center at Breitscheidplatz. Around the same time, Austrian architects Georg Kohlmaier and Barna von Sartory proposed 'Rolling Pavements' on Ku'damm, a two-kilometre-long tube with human conveyor belts, deemed too expensive and ugly. Meanwhile, Russian architect Sergius Ruegenberg proposed a eccentric Wartehalle for Bahnhof Zoo in 1948, resembling an eccentric hat, which was not selected. These proposals reflect the city's openness to innovative and sometimes unconventional ideas.
The 1970s saw more ambitious plans. Ralf Student and Ursulina Student-Witte devised a plan in 1973 to construct a terraced housing complex above the AVUS between Charlottenburg and Nikolassee, which was never realised. Similarly, Otto Bartning's 1922 design for the Sternkirche, an elegant church with a domed roof and cascading arches, was never realised but influenced modern Berlin architecture. Manfred Jäckel, Lothar Kwasnitza, and Dieter Urbach submitted a layout for a GDR-era residential complex on Leninplatz in 1967, featuring a space station-like columnar structure. These plans demonstrate the city's willingness to explore new residential designs and urban layouts.
These unbuilt architectural proposals in Berlin reflect the city's dynamic nature and its architects' willingness to push boundaries. While some designs were too ambitious or impractical for their time, they offer valuable insights into Berlin's architectural history and its ever-evolving urban landscape.
