Vehicle plunges into Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

A tour guide at BusTravel Iceland, Tomas Ragnarsson, recounts a harrowing incident from Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon on Breiðamerkursandur beach on Monday. A visiting tourist found herself in peril after inadvertently starting her vehicle in gear, causing it to roll down a steep hillside and into the lagoon.

Ragnarsson was with the tourist group, searching for a missing person when the accident occurred. He described witnessing the woman attempt to exit the vehicle in the fourth hour of the day before it plummeted into the lagoon.

"I heard a commotion behind me, and I saw the girl struggling with the car and half-way out of it," Ragnarsson recounted. He then acted swiftly, throwing his phone away and sprinting to her aid.

The guide waded into the lagoon to attempt to save the vehicle and limit damages. However, the tires of the submerged vehicle failed to grip in the sand, making it impossible to reverse the vehicle out of the water. Ragnarsson was also tending to a group of tourists who were waiting for him.

Luckily, an army of bystanders rushed to assist the woman, who managed to free herself from the vehicle before it continued forward. The local authorities were later called to remove the vehicle from the lagoon.

Ragnarsson expressed gratitude for the quick response and urged everyone to remain cautious when operating motor vehicles, especially in scenic locations like Jökulsárlón.

No further details about the incident, such as the tourist's identity or the extent of any injuries, were available at the time of writing.
