Venturing Through the Highlands: Shan's Journey Towards Recovery - A Personal Account from the Mountain Paths
Venturing Beyond the Mundane: One Woman's Incredible Journey
In 2012, life dealt a heavy blow as I underwent a risky double mastectomy that didn't quite go as planned. Consequently, I found myself enduring back-to-back reconstructive surgeries and battling my eyesight, slipping away. I crashed into a dark abyss of depression, and my personal life crumbled. When my father succumbed to cancer after years of battle, leaving behind dreams unfulfilled, I realized it was time for drastic change.
During those surgery recovery periods, the only physical activity I was allowed was walking. I found solace in the simple, hour-long strolls around my neighborhood. Seeking a fresh perspective, I began exploring local woodlands, then venturing further afield to other states. But I yearned for something more—something grander. And so, I decided to embark on a daring adventure, crossing the ocean to hike 200 miles across the Scottish Highlands via the West Highland Way and Great Glen Way.
With determination burning in my heart, I trained, researched, and prepared for this extraordinary journey. I even started a YouTube channel to document my preparations (and the hike itself) and to help keep me accountable. In April of 2022, I boarded a plane to Scotland, carrying everything I needed for the trip on my back. It was the adventure of a lifetime.
Even as I struggled against towering mountains, braved freezing rain, and endured piercing winds, my feet throbbing from miles of rough, rocky terrain, I couldn't help but feel a profound sense of contentment. The daily routine of walking, taking in the awe-inspiring beauty of nature, eating, setting up camp, and sleeping convinced me that true happiness is simple and requires very little.
The transformative experience of this hike taught me about resilience and the fact that we often need less than we think to be genuinely happy. I learned to prioritize myself and seize life's opportunities before they pass us by. Life is the ultimate adventure, and my Scottish odyssey began with that first brave step toward embracing myself.
